Kicking off

It's a great feeling to be working with a group on a video project again.  My first impressions of the 2014 SLAS group is that they're bright, willing and soaking up everything they can.

I'm in Kilifi visiting my PhD student Al for a week to work on facilitation skills with him.  We're using the presence of a group of 9 school leavers on an attachment scheme here at KEMRI to develop some ideas for how to use video in schools.

The attachment scheme is an opportunity for school leavers to visit at KEMRI over 3 months and learn more about what goes on there.  Its an opportunity for them to think about their futures and whether that includes more study and a career in science or research.

  4. I feel that the entire group is interactive and embracing their ideas for the videos. The rules set yesterday have been followed so far. I liked most the task where the group has been divided into 3 smaller groups expected to work on a video project each. One is to make a SLAS promotional video, another about a professional (future projection) and the third about a boy who goes to campus and leaving behind sad parents who feel they are losing him to the world. Yesterday was enjoyable and I hope for the same for all today.

  5. Wooow!!! busy busy day.
Today we had an opportunity to build up on story board drawing that was introduced yesterday. The teams were given an opportunity to do 2 shots for an advertisement for any of the equipment at their disposal. They chose microphone (the small one that's clipped on collar), head phones and a pen. This came forth with challenges mainly Microphone jamming, loud background noise (power generator) and misinterpretation of the task- which brought out an interesting aspect of behind the scenes for making an advertisement.
The groups were later actively involved in editing which helped grounding aspects of filming like making the best of the shots that you have, inserting sound tracks to liven up a film and cover for unpleasant background noises among others.
The other interesting thing we did was a 'happy' dancing video shoot for about 20-30 minutes where the school leavers walked in the main KWTRP gate dancing all the way to the laboratories...we are yet to edit this; I can't wait to have the final product!!!
Lastly, we revisited the three video projects where they had to incorporate the story boards so that they may get another chance to develop their ideas and come up with a tentative script- that will obviously evolve. This helped the groups see their projects slowly coming to life! see you all tomorrow.
